Sunday Report

Sunday Night, 07/08/07 at 21:12:53

We arrived! Thank you for all your prayers, we had no difficulties on our trip down. We arrived on the hill at about 4 p.m., the first group to arrive. There are two other groups here this week, each one with about 15 people, so we are the largest group this week. We have the upstairs bunk rooms to ourselves, and the main kitchens & dining area too. There are new mattresses on the beds, and the bathhouse has had some re-furbishing, which will make our stay here a little more restful when we need it.

So, without further ado, our work assignment: Demolition Derby!

The majority of our group will be working on two demolitions this week. The first one we will just be on tomorrow, the other is likely to take us the rest of the week. As new houses are built, the old ones have to come down, and actually, in the case of the houses we will be demolishing this week, they are demolishing the old houses so that there is room to build the new houses. Greg (the volunteer coordinator) says that they were both built in the early 1900’s, and have needed to come down for some time. The Michigan group that is here is also doing demolitions.

Just a stone’s throw from the house where most of us will be all week (Tue – Fri), is the house just four of our group will be working on. It is a rehab, meaning that it is an existing house that needs work but is salvageable. There will be insulation & new windows & doors, and some other things to make the house warmer for the older woman who lives there to have more comfortable & safe winters. Tomorrow Todd, Trevor, Sarah and Loren will be at that house, but we are likely to have some taking turns with being on the demolition and being on the rehab house during the week.

Right now everyone is having some recreation time with cards (euchre of course) and ping-pong, basketball & reading.

If you want to read along with our devotions, tonight take a look at Psalm 139. Also, we are going to be working with the story of the Good Samaritan this week (begins at Luke 10:25), which is the lectionary reading for next Sunday. Read the introduction, through verse 29. How can YOU love the Lord with all your heart, soul, strength and mind this week?

Peace be with you,

Kim

Thanks to everyone who went, and everyone whose donations made this trip possible.
