The Next Day Monday ReportMonday Report, 07/09/07 at 22:09:51 Oh, it was a hot day today. We started the day with a safety lecture, reminding us all how to be safe on construction sites. 18 of us went to a lot where the home had been demolished and mostly taken away except for two outbuildings and some remaining debris from the home. So we tore down the two outbuildings, and bagged garbage and loaded the dump truck a few times. We were able to come back to the HOMES site for lunch – which was particularly nice as there was very little shade at the site, and no port-a-potty! Luke wins the hard worker award for the day, with Robin and Jim Ray a close second. They were constantly at work, and were animals when it came to tearing down that shed! But truly, everyone worked hard, and as usual, we finished earlier than expected. So we got to come back “up the hill” to the HOMES site, and no, not take our showers early – we spent another hour or so pulling nails out of salvageable wood. HOMES has been having auctions periodically of good wood and other items, and in the last couple of years, the salvaged wood and other items have sold for enough to purchase a new dump truck that won’t break down every other trip. Our other four (no pictures, sorry), went to a home that needs a fair amount of rehab work done. They were using spray insulation, but the sprayer had problems, and so it was a very long day. They did go to a nearby house and do a little finishing work before the inspector came, and then headed back to their site to try a little more with the insulation. Tomorrow our groups will be much closer together, as the demolished house we are going to clear is just a few houses away from the rehab house. So we may have some “job trading” as the days go on.
Thanks to everyone who went, and everyone whose donations made this trip possible. The Next Day |
